How It Started 40 Years Ago:

Building the Future, While Reflecting on the Past

In 1982, a temporary shelter opened in the basement of the First Congregational Church in Stamford. The visionaries and co-founders Leslie Furst, Maureen Hughes, Pat Phillips, Nancy Stoetzer, and Reverend Gary P. Brown established what is today’s Pacific House Emergency Shelter.

Historical Timeline:

  • 1985: Became an independent nonprofit

  • 1988: Purchased and opened 597 Pacific Street shelter

  • 1996–2020: Opened 10 permanent supportive housing properties, launched Meal-a-Month and Young Adult Programs, and became the founding partner of Fairfield 08, known today as The Housing Collective

  • 2021–2025: Expanded housing portfolio to include Parkview North, a multifamily home in Darien, and two properties in Stamford’s West Side

  • 2027: Rotary Commons will open and house 19 families, 21 individuals, and the new Pacific House headquarters. The second West Side property will open and house 15 families

Together, with supporters like you, we have built a stronger community and created a legacy.

Now, be the champion who launches the future and writes the next chapter.
